Phenolic CNC Machining Services

Yumei offers high quality phenolic machining services for a variety of materials and applications. Phenolics are materials made with layers of either paper, canvas, linen, or other woven fabric bound together with phenolic resin.

Yumei offers custom fabrication of laminates made with phenolic resin, composite blends. Phenolic material is non-metallic, insulative, strong, and is easily worked, making it ideal in machining applications. Phenolic materials are used for insulative or non-metallic structural components, terminal boards, high speed or high wear components, countertops, and much more.

What is Phenolic Resin?

Phenolic resin is a type of thermosetting polymer made by reacting phenol with formaldehyde. It was one of the first synthetic plastics ever developed and is still widely used in demanding industrial applications due to its durability and heat resistance.

Key Characteristics Of Phenolic

High heat resistance

Maintains stability at elevated temperatures

Flame retardancy

Naturally fire-resistant with low smoke generation

Mechanical

Good rigidity and dimensional stability

Electrical

Suitable for electrical and electronic components

Chemical

Resists many solvents and corrosive substances

Advantages and Disadvantages of Phenolic Resin

Advantages Disadvantages
Excellent Fire Resistance: Naturally flame-retardant with low smoke and toxicity (ideal for FST requirements) Brittleness: Lower impact resistance compared to thermoplastics
High Thermal Stability: Performs well under elevated temperatures Limited Processability: Cannot be remelted or reshaped after curing (thermoset)
Strong Dimensional Stability: Maintains shape and integrity under load and heat Color Limitations: Typically dark (brown to black), limiting aesthetic options
Good Electrical Insulation: Suitable for electrical and electronic applications Moderate Machinability: More difficult to machine than materials like ABS
Outstanding Chemical Resistance: Resists many solveznts, fuels, and corrosive substances Longer Processing Cycles: Curing process can increase production time

Phenolic Resin FAQ

A:Phenolic materials offer:

  • High heat resistance

  • Excellent flame retardancy (low smoke & toxicity)

  • Good mechanical strength and rigidity

  • Strong electrical insulation

  • Excellent chemical resistance

A:Yes. Phenolic resin is inherently flame-resistant and produces very low smoke and toxic gases, making it ideal for applications requiring strict fire safety standards (FST).

A: Phenolic materials typically withstand continuous temperatures of 150–250°C, depending on formulation and reinforcement.

A:Yes. Phenolic has excellent dielectric properties, making it suitable for electrical insulation and electronic components.

A:Yes. Phenolic can be machined, but it is more brittle than thermoplastics, requiring proper tooling and processing techniques.

A:Phenolic CNC machining refers to the precision machining of phenolic resin-based laminates using CNC milling, turning, or drilling processes to produce high-performance industrial components.

A:Common types include:Paper-based phenolic (for electrical insulation)、Cotton fabric phenolic (for mechanical strength)、Glass cloth phenolic (for high heat resistance).

A:Phenolic machined parts are widely used in:Electrical and electronics、Aerospace、Automotive、 Industrial machinery、Energy and power systems.

A:Typical tolerances range from ±0.1 mm to ±0.5 mm, depending on part geometry, material grade, and machining conditions.

A:Carbide tools are recommended due to their wear resistance. Sharp cutting edges and proper feeds and speeds help achieve better surface quality and reduce defects.
