The customer is a company specializing in the production of precision mechanical components, with years of deep industry experience. Its products are widely used in automation equipment, electronic instruments, and other high-end applications, with high precision and stability serving as its core competitive advantages.
The company has long been engaged in high-volume manufacturing of supporting components for equipment assemblies. In this project, the customer required batch production of a thin-walled hexagonal column featuring an external hex profile, a central through-hole, and chamfered edges, with a high length-to-diameter ratio.
As a critical component in the customer’s core product, this part demands exceptionally high standards in machining accuracy and process stability, making it a challenging application in precision manufacturing.
Yumei Precision Parts Machining Cooperation Case.
The customer’s core needs focus on the mass processing of hexagonal columns, specifically as follows: first, the processed parts are of outer hexagon + central through hole + chamfer structure, which are thin-walled long-diameter ratio parts (L/D > 4), and the central hole offset must be strictly controlled within the tolerance of ±0.02mm to ensure subsequent assembly accuracy; second, select suitable aluminum alloy materials to balance processing stability, part strength and production cost, and meet the consistency requirements of mass production; third, solve the processing defects in batch trial production, improve production efficiency and product qualification rate, and ensure on-time delivery of orders.

The customer initially designed to use 2024 aluminum alloy to process the hexagonal column parts, but serious quality problems occurred during batch trial production, as follows.
After processing, the central hole offset is in the range of 0.04–0.12mm, far exceeding the drawing tolerance of ±0.02mm, resulting in the parts being unable to be assembled normally, and the batch trial production qualification rate is only 85%.
2024 aluminum alloy has high strength but poor toughness, and the internal stress release is uneven. Micro-deformation and stress rebound are likely to occur during processing in the long axis direction; the hexagonal structure has insufficient rigidity during clamping and cutting, which, combined with the aspect ratio of L/D > 4, further amplifies the deformation effect and aggravates the hole position offset.
The customer tried two schemes but failed to meet the standards – Scheme 1: Adjust 2024-T3 aluminum alloy to other heat treatment states to reduce internal stress, but the improvement effect is limited, and the offset still fails to meet the standard; Scheme 2: Change the stretched material to extrusion molding, which can theoretically reduce deformation, but has problems such as high mold cost, difficulty in controlling the consistency of hexagonal cross-section size, and insufficient batch stability, which cannot be put into mass production.
After receiving the customer’s demand, Yumei set up a professional technical team. Combining years of experience in precision aluminum alloy processing, the team conducted a comprehensive process evaluation of the problems faced by the customer and accurately located the core crux – the material characteristics of 2024 aluminum alloy are incompatible with the part structure and processing technology. Based on this, Yumei adopted an overall solution of “material replacement + process adaptation” to solve the problem from the root, with specific steps as follows.
Systematically compare the mechanical properties and processing characteristics of 2024 and 6061 aluminum alloys, confirming that 6061 aluminum alloy has more uniform internal stress, better processing stability and dimensional retention, moderate toughness, which can effectively reduce processing deformation and stress rebound, and its strength can meet the part use requirements, with more cost advantages.
According to the characteristics of 6061 aluminum alloy, adjust the clamping method and cutting parameters, design a special flexible fixture to reduce stress concentration during clamping of the hexagonal structure; optimize the cutting path, adopt layered and symmetric cutting to disperse cutting force and alleviate the deformation effect caused by excessive aspect ratio.
First conduct small-batch trial production, real-time monitor processing dimensions, accurately detect central hole offset, and fine-tune process parameters according to the results to ensure that the offset is stably controlled within the range of ≤0.01–0.02mm, verifying the feasibility of the scheme.
After the small-batch trial production is qualified, officially put into mass production, implement strict quality control throughout the process to ensure the accuracy consistency of each batch of parts, and completely solve the central hole offset problem.

According to the customer’s personalized needs, Yumei customized an integrated solution of “material replacement + process optimization + quality control”, with core content and advantages as follows.
It is recommended that the customer replace 2024 aluminum alloy with 6061 aluminum alloy. After replacement, the processing stability is significantly improved, the internal stress is uniform, the processing deformation is greatly reduced, and the central hole offset is stably within ≤0.01–0.02mm, meeting the drawing requirements, while balancing strength and cost.
Aluminum Alloy Selection Guide
Customize a special flexible fixture, optimize the clamping method to reduce clamping stress; adjust cutting parameters and paths to disperse cutting force, solving the deformation problem caused by insufficient rigidity of the hexagonal structure and excessive aspect ratio; establish an exclusive process parameter library to ensure the consistency of mass production.
Establish a whole-process detection system from raw material inspection to finished product delivery, accurately detect each batch of parts, and timely correct production deviations to ensure product qualification rate.
Get rid of the misunderstanding of local optimization, start from material characteristics, and solve the deformation and hole position offset problems from the root through material replacement, avoiding repeated trial and error and saving time costs.
Combine the part structure and batch needs, customize fixtures and process parameters, adapt to the customer’s existing equipment, no additional investment is required, and mass landing is quickly realized.
On the premise of ensuring precision and strength, 6061 aluminum alloy reduces raw material and production costs, and further reduces comprehensive costs combined with the improvement of qualification rate.
Yumei is deeply engaged in the field of precision aluminum alloy machining, good at processing thin-walled long-diameter ratio parts. The technical team responds in a timely manner and provides full technical support to ensure efficient implementation of the scheme.

To ensure the implementation of the solution, relying on mature precision processing technology, Yumei has taken the following core technical measures for the processing difficulties of the hexagonal column.
Customize a flexible fixture that fits the outer hexagon + chamfer structure of the part, realize multi-point uniform clamping, reduce clamping stress concentration, and avoid hole position offset caused by clamping deformation; the fixture is made of wear-resistant and corrosion-resistant materials, equipped with anti-scratch design to ensure the consistency of batch clamping and the surface precision of parts.
Combine the characteristics of 6061 aluminum alloy, adjust the cutting speed, feed rate and cutting depth, adopt high-speed precision cutting technology to reduce cutting thermal deformation and vibration; optimize the cutting path, layered and symmetric cutting to disperse cutting force and alleviate the deformation effect of excessive aspect ratio.
Add an intermediate low-temperature aging process during processing to release the internal stress generated by processing, avoiding dimensional deviation caused by stress rebound; for thin-walled structures, adopt progressive processing to gradually remove the allowance and reduce processing deformation.
Use high-precision equipment such as coordinate measuring machines and projectors to fully inspect key indicators such as central hole offset, hexagonal size and chamfer precision, with a detection accuracy of 0.001mm; establish a detection data file, track precision changes in real time, and adjust process parameters in a timely manner.
Formulate an exclusive operation guide, clarify the processing, clamping and detection standards, require operators to strictly implement them to avoid human errors; regularly carry out technical training to improve operational proficiency and ensure the stability of mass production.
