The customer is a U.S.-based professional bicycle brand specializing in the development and mass production of off-road mountain bikes and professional racing bicycles. Focused on the high-performance cycling market, the customer maintains stringent competition-level requirements for the precision, strength, durability, and surface finish of critical components such as frames and stems.
Before working with us, the customer had been relying on a local U.S. machine shop for the mass production of a new mountain bike racing stem. However, the supplier experienced significant production and delivery delays, forcing the customer to postpone the launch of its new racing model. As a result, the customer risked missing the peak overseas cycling sales season, causing substantial market and promotional losses.
To recover the project schedule and ensure the successful launch of the new model, while eliminating the ongoing lead-time issues, the customer terminated its previous local manufacturing partnership. After multiple rounds of prototype testing, factory audits, and process comparisons, the customer ultimately selected us as its exclusive custom machining partner for the mass production of the new high-performance mountain bike stem.

Unlike conventional bicycle stems designed for recreational riding, this racing-grade component is engineered for high-intensity off-road riding, aggressive racing, and demanding impact conditions. The customer therefore introduced upgraded technical specifications covering material selection, dimensional tolerances, surface finish, and anodizing performance.
These enhanced requirements were designed to minimize common issues encountered in demanding cycling applications, including installation noise, component loosening, surface wear, and corrosion, while ensuring consistent performance and long-term reliability under harsh riding conditions.
Based on the customer’s original U.S. engineering drawings, a competition-level manufacturing specification was established that goes well beyond conventional standards for recreational bicycles. Every finished part must pass inspection and meet all specified requirements before shipment.
The core specifications cover four critical areas: material selection, dimensional tolerances, surface roughness, and anodizing treatment. Each requirement has been specifically optimized and upgraded to meet the demanding performance requirements of high-intensity off-road and competitive riding applications.

| Process Parameter | Customer-Specified Technical Requirements | Typical Industry Standard | Key Benefits of the Upgraded Process |
|---|---|---|---|
| Material | Aerospace-grade 7075-T6 aluminum alloy, with an original material certificate. Hardness and tensile strength must meet specifications, with no inclusions or porosity. | 6061 aluminum alloy is commonly used, offering lower strength and fatigue resistance. | High strength, lightweight construction, and excellent impact resistance for demanding off-road racing conditions. |
| Critical Dimensional Tolerances | Handlebar clamping bores (31.8 mm / 35 mm) controlled to ±0.01 mm to ±0.02 mm. | Typical tolerances of ±0.05 mm to ±0.10 mm. | Ensures secure, gap-free clamping with minimal micro-movement, helping eliminate unwanted noise during riding. |
| Surface Roughness | All machined surfaces achieve a uniform surface roughness of Ra 0.8 μm. | Typical Ra 1.6 μm to Ra 3.2 μm, with more visible machining marks. | Smooth, burr-free surfaces provide better mating and assembly fit while enhancing component appearance, durability, and overall product quality. |
| Corrosion Protection | Hard anodizing with an anodic oxide coating thickness of ≥25 μm. The coating must be uniform, firmly bonded, and free from peeling or noticeable color variation. | Conventional anodizing typically provides a coating thickness of 5–8 μm, which is more susceptible to wear, oxidation, and color fading. | Enhanced wear resistance, corrosion resistance, and UV resistance for reliable performance in demanding outdoor and mountainous environments. |
The racing-grade bicycle stem features a complex lightweighting structure with intricate cutouts, contoured chamfers, and curved slots. With conventional 3-axis machining, multiple setups are often required, increasing the risk of positioning errors and making it difficult to consistently achieve ultra-tight tolerances of ±0.01 mm.
To address this challenge, we use 5-axis simultaneous CNC machining throughout the production process. Multiple surfaces and critical features can be precision-machined in a single setup, minimizing repositioning errors and maintaining the dimensional accuracy of critical handlebar clamping bores.
7075-T6 aluminum alloy also presents specific machining challenges, including tool adhesion, tearing, and deformation in thin-wall sections. To overcome these issues, we use coated carbide cutting tools specifically selected for aluminum machining, combined with optimized high-speed spindle speeds and controlled feed rates.
A multi-step material removal strategy and custom anti-deformation workholding fixtures are also employed to control cutting forces and minimize distortion. This helps relieve machining-induced stress and prevents vibration and deformation around the thin-wall and lightweighted sections, enabling a stable surface finish of Ra 0.8 μm across critical machined surfaces.

To address common issues such as surface wear, oxidation, and limited outdoor durability associated with conventional bicycle stems, we implement a controlled two-stage surface treatment process.
After precision machining, the components first undergo fine abrasive blasting to uniformly refine the surface texture, reduce minor machining marks, and improve the adhesion and consistency of the subsequent anodized coating.
The parts then undergo a thick-film hard anodizing process. Key process parameters, including bath temperature and electrical current, are continuously controlled throughout production to maintain an anodic oxide coating thickness of ≥25 μm.
The resulting coating is uniform, dense, and firmly bonded, with stringent controls to prevent pinholes, peeling, and coating defects. This significantly improves surface hardness, wear resistance, and outdoor corrosion resistance, making the finished 7075-T6 aluminum stems well suited for demanding mountain biking conditions, including rain, snow, mud, dust, and prolonged UV exposure.

To address the customer’s two major challenges—previous delivery delays and inconsistent product quality—we established a dedicated production assurance system for this project, balancing precision, quality control, and production efficiency.
All critical dimensions, geometric tolerances, and surface roughness requirements are verified using a Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM). Inspection data is recorded and retained for each production batch, enabling full traceability of inspection results throughout the manufacturing process.
We also implemented a three-stage quality control system, including First Article Inspection (FAI), in-process sampling inspection, and final inspection of finished parts. This comprehensive inspection process helps prevent dimensional deviations, surface defects, and insufficient anodizing thickness before shipment.
On the production side, we optimized the manufacturing schedule and established an expedited production channel for export orders to accelerate the project without compromising quality. As a result, the entire batch was completed and delivered ahead of schedule, resolving the customer’s previous delays and ensuring the new bicycle model could be launched as planned.
After delivery to the U.S. customer, the batch of 7075-T6 high-performance mountain bike racing stems successfully passed the customer’s factory assembly validation, professional track riding tests, and outdoor durability testing.
All critical requirements for dimensional tolerances, surface finish, and anodizing coating thickness were fully met. After installation, the stems provided a secure and precise fit with no looseness or unwanted noise. Under high-intensity off-road riding conditions, the components showed no visible deformation, excessive wear, or corrosion-related discoloration.
Compared with the products supplied by the customer’s previous local machining partner, our stems delivered an overall improvement in dimensional consistency, surface quality, and outdoor durability. At the same time, the production and delivery lead time significantly exceeded the customer’s expectations, helping the customer launch its new racing model on schedule and capitalize on the overseas cycling equipment market during the peak sales season.
This U.S. high-performance mountain bike racing stem project successfully addressed the customer’s critical challenge of production and delivery delays. By combining the strength and lightweight properties of 7075-T6 aerospace-grade aluminum, advanced 5-axis precision CNC machining, a high-quality Ra 0.8 μm surface finish, and 25 μm+ thick-film hard anodizing, we successfully delivered competition-level component quality while maintaining efficient and reliable production capacity.
